Arms and armour have a long and complicated history of development and many of the terms used over the centuries to describe them and their components are no longer familiar. This brief outline is designed to help the visitor to the Armouries in Her Majesty´s Tower of London to
recognise some of the physical changes that took place over the centuries and to understand the basic terminology.

The text used for the first edition of this booklet (1960) was copied, with certain modification, from the Clarendon Press publication Medieva/England (Oxford, 1958), Chapter XX, by kind permission of the Delegates. It was written by the late Sir James Mann, K.C.V.O., Master of the Armouries 1939-62. A reprint in 1966 included minor amendments. In this second edition the text is extensively rewritten
in the light of newly acquired knowledge. A third edition with a completely new text must await completion of the rearrangement of the Armouries now proceeding. Unless otherwise noted in the captions, ali the illustrations in this booklet are of exhibits in the Armouries in the Tower of London.
