The fiery, passionate grandeur of Puccini´s Tosca came to life with the Metropolitan Opera´s new production of March 1985, by Franco Zeffirelli. An internationally renowned cast of singers took part in this Tosca. Of Hildegard Behrens in the title role one critic wrote, 'She was regal and proud, and one responded strongly to her power of conception and intelligent realization of her difficult role.' The critics showered praise on Plácido Domingo. 'Cavaradossi has always been one of Domingo´s finest roles, and it remains so. Commanding in his singing line and noble demeanor, he once again gave a model portrayal.' And Cornell MacNeil 'gives Scarpia a richness of characterization that emphasizes an aristocratic, reasonable suavity that is just as spine-chilling as overt brutality.' Conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli, making his Met debut, was cited for his 'remarkable intensity.' His Tosca is like no other, its fortíssimos crashing forth, its lyrical melodies spun out to the breaking point, everything heard fresh.' This presentation of Tosca is subtitled in English and was made on March 20 and 27, 1985.
