FACTS ON FILE YEARBOOK 1941 advertised itself as 'a complete daily chronology' of the year 1941. The yearbook consists of a hardbound copy of all 52 weekly issues and all four quarterly indexes of the FACTS ON FILE as they were published in the year 1941. H.V. Kaltenborn, a news commentator of the time, wrote in his forward that 'here is the raw material of tomorrow´s history.' To give an example of how the material is organized, I reference one random section of the book, dealing with March 12 - 18, 1941. There are news summaries of the major events in National Affairs, U.S. Defense, Foreign Affaris, Latin America, Finance and Economics, Arts and Science, Sports, and Miscelaneous. For example, during this week, there were stories pertaining to... - Roosevelt asking 7 billion dollars for the defense budget - Labor strikes in New Jersey - A Supreme Court decision - Dedication of a Texas air base - Comissioning of a new Navy destroyer - British / German air raids - Blizzard sweeps Northwest - A fight at Madison Square Garden ...among many, many others. FACTS ON FILE YEARBOOK 1941 is 418 well-organized pages of news summaries, each of which is about one sentence to one short paragraph in length; often they contain figures concerning money, shipping tonage, war casualties, etc. There is a very large cumulative index printed on yellow paper at the end. There are no photograpghs, illustrations or maps; this is straight news, and a lot of it. For researches, books like this are beyond indispensible. They contain much information which has not been organized in a useful way on the Internet and, thanks to the chronological nature of the layout, is very easy to use. It´s truly a handy reference guide to the events of 1941, a year which even at the time was regarded as one of the banner (black banner, perhaps) years of human history.
